“Wonderful Vacation”
We just returned from an 8 day stay at BSB. I must say that I was a little hesitant after booking when I started reading some of the reviews on here. However, we had an excellent time and were not disappointed. First things first; the customs in Jamaica are a little bit of a pain. I think that we arrived at the same time as several other planes so there was quite a line to get through. We only waited about 45mins though, not to bad. The customs officials were quite nice and happy to help when you got to the counter. We were then directed to a waiting room for Beaches and Sandals guest to wait for our shuttle. The lounge was very well appointed and plenty of seating for everyone. Our wait was only about 10min. before our shuttle arrived. TIP: When they page for Beaches Negril, they also mean Beaches Sandy Bay. They didn't specifically say Sandy Bay so we weren't sure if we should go or not. There was a little confusion when we got to the shuttle as to who was going where. They had the Sandy Bay people in one shuttle and the Negril people in another. After waiting in the bus for about 15min. We were all put together for the trip. The bus trip was very interesting. Our driver was very friendly and answered every question we had about the country. It was kind of amazing how much he knew about the history of the island. It was nice to see the actual country and not just the resort. It really makes you appreciate everything that we have. The check in process at the resort went smoothly. No real problems to speak of. After checking in we were escorted to our room by a bellman and given a tour along the way. Where the restaurants were, the bar, the pool, etc. He then showed us everything in the room. We were supposed to have a crib in our room for our 19mo. old daughter which was not there. By the time we returned from dinner it was in the room though. The second day we were kind of unsure what to do. They post all the activities on a board that you can check to see what is going on, I was a little worried that we might get bored. That was not the case though. Oops. I forgot about the room. You can tell that this is an old resort and in need of a remodel. The rooms aren't bad there just not 4 or 5 star. It was plent big enough for the three of us. The bathroom was a little cramped but everything functioned well. No problems w/ toilets or low pressure showers. The balcony was really nice to have. We would sit out there in the evening after our daughter fell asleep. Wonderful view. Ok, back to the activities. Sesame Street was excellent for the kids. The parents too for that matter. We loved seeing them come out and dance on stage. They would always take picture with the kids if you wanted. We didn't go to many of the other evening activities because our daughter would fall asleep around 9 o'clock. Not a problem, we would just watch a movie on tv or sit on the balcony and enjoy the view. Most of the staff was excellent. You can tell they love what they do. I was really impressed that they remembered the kids name all week. We would go to dinner and the wait staff would yell out our daughters name. It was really fun. Ricardo from the Sesame Grill was our favorite, our daughter loved him. There were some of that staff that just seemed a little irritated, mostly the watersports guys. Other than that they seemed great. The food was good. The Bayside had normal buffett food which was good enough for us. The sit down restaurants I thought had to limited of a selection but what we did eat was good. I loved the Jerk Chicken at the Sesame Grill. Mmmm. The beach was just amazing. We got to the resort just after Tropical storm Gustav came through, so there was a bunch of muck washing up on the beach. The staff was quick to clean it up and keep the beach looking nice. The water was beautiful and warm. Excellent for lounging around in to cool off from the hot sun. The only watersport activity we did was the glass bottom boat. Honestly I wasn't terribly impressed the glass was hard to see through so it was tough to see the fish and the coral. It was fun to go out on a boat though. I do recommend you take the shuttle to beaches negril at least once. The facility there is amazing. The waterpark was nice, we loved the lazy river. Just make sure that you watch the shuttle times. We wanted to come back at 12:30 and didn't realize there wasn't a shuttle until 2:30. Our daughter was past her naptime and very cranky. The departure was simple. We packed and tagged our bags with the provided tags. The send you a package the night before telling you check out time, shuttle arrival time, and when they will pick up your bags. We set our bags out about 10min. before they said and they were picked up right on time.
All in all we had a good time. I don't know if we would return to Sandy Bay though. Its a nice trip for families w/ small children that want a more laid back atmosphere.
